How can women gain an upper hand with the eighteenth century limitations and man’s superiority in society? In the two texts, Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe and Fantomina by Eliza Haywood, one protagonist connives their way to fulfill empty vanity whereas the other manipulates for financial satisfaction. Moll, the protagonist from Moll Flanders discovers her independence from the exchange of sexual favors for monetary value and eventually begins a career in thieving when she reaches middle age. Moll is on the low end of the totem pole. Fantomina who is considered aristocratic is intrigued by the idea of prostitution in order to win over an unreliable suitor. Each protagonist views the manipulation of man as the starting point of feminism. Although both women seize control by the means if manipulation only Moll attains true satisfaction, whereas Fantomina does not.

Throughout the course of each novella and novel the usage of disguise is crucial to each character’s means of control. Fantomina is first intrigued by a prostitute, which spurs her many disguises. Fantomina can envision herself consuming attention that this particular prostitute receives. Ultimately she decides to dress down for acknowledgement.

  • Kaitlyn Levesque: Respect and Pity, Inversely Proportionate

    Occupy Philadelphia

    .

……….I feel as if I’ve been following the Occupy movement as intensively as the average American, which is to say I hear about it and read the occasional article on various occupy happenings but couldn’t concisely tell you what the movement is about or what their demands are. And upon consideration, I’m really not sure if anyone can give a concise answer to those questions, because to the best of my understanding the movement has grown so fiercely that each individual person brings new grievances to the table and is unitedly taking an individual stance against whatever they think is wrong. All of this being said the Occupy movement is starting to falter in momentum. Numbers have thinned, coverage has lessened, and the latest news is focusing more on the misdoings of police officers than the goals and progress of the movement itself.

    .

    Occupy Philadelphia

    .

I wandered into City Hall, the home base of the Occupy Philadelphia movement on a Sunday afternoon and found the whole scene rather anticlimactic and sorely disappointing. It was past noon and yet barely a dozen people were moving about; the tent city that had been erected weeks prior looked filthy and deserted. I walked, I observed, I read, I listened, and I ultimately documented. The movement is fading; they lacked organization and respect. There are still some people genuinely concerned and invested in this movement, but for every legitimate occupier there seemed to be someone who was just bumming along for the ride.

    .

This what I wanted to illustrate, the diminishing voice of the movement, the genuinely concerned citizens with a message to deliver barely seeming to keep their voice a float in an overwhelming sea of an off putting and massive mess. The signs shows a message trying to be delivered, but they are surrounded by filth and little else, for the signs now outnumber the people who are still valid members of the movement.

  • Renata Siruckova: Versatile Wonder

……….For women, clothing has always had a strong connection to fashion and the desire to look stunningly beautiful in an outfit. However, I have found that men look for something a little different when it comes to how they dress. They look for a simple outfit that will provide fit and comfort, while being extremely versatile and durable. In a recent photo shoot, I wanted to explore this idea. I took casual, everyday outfits for men, and portrayed them in a way that would show they would conform to whatever lifestyle the man wearing the outfit has. The styles are tested to the extreme through the movements of jumping, flipping, running, etc. I also wanted to give a sense of power to men when they see the images – perhaps making them think something along the lines of “If I wear these kinds of clothes, I could do a flip off of those stairs too!”

  • Mikel Elam: A Few Words About Hope

    www.MikelElam.com

Posted on February 26, 2011 by Mikel Elam

    .

The image was created as a portrait of myself – a much younger Mikel Elam. I chose this image because now it feels like someone I hardly remember more than twenty years ago. I do recall how optimistic I was and remember how I thought the future would be bright. All of the issues of my early years would be erased. It didn’t happen. Many good things did happen for me, and I am extremely grateful to the powers that be. Many things also caught me by surprise. Some of my friends managed to succeed in the shake up, yet many more remained on the periphery of annihilation. Along comes Barack Obama: A young man using modern devices to communicate new ideas to a thirsty audience. When I merged those thoughts with the urban legend and the visual artistry of Shepard Fairey, The word “HOPE” was reborn.

Perfect timing. Many Americans need HOPE today. Life isn’t what we thought it would be. There are fewer jobs, a bleak future that includes only the rich and poor now. A nation extremely divided with no resolve in sight. The surprise was Barack Obama. A man of color in a sea of color blended Presidents. It seemed as though his speech on HOPE reached beyond our country and throughout the world. So many people want to HOPE for a better day – a better month and a greater lifetime. I know I do- so politics meets art. Someone came up with a wonderful idea to allow its user to take his or her own image, preferably a photograph and convert it into a “Hope” poster. So I took it one step further and took one of my paintings of myself as a young man hopeful for the future and emerged it with the powerful graphics called ”Hope”. Perhaps in some small way I still believe a better future is possible and if nothing else I got the chance to express it through the infinite power of art.

  • Anna: At The Plaza Hotel, Part 2

    Fashion By Shawn Pinckney

    .

……….Anna tried on the last dress Shawn Pinckney designed. A black sheer tight fitting piece – made the ensemble erotic and classy . It looked great on her tall lean body – so I clicked away and secured the record of the moment. After the shoot we walked around the corner to Columbus Circle looking for a chic place to enjoy dinner. Heads turned as we entered an establishment recommended by the concierge at the Plaza.

    Anna With Sheer Lace

As soon as we entered New York’s trendiest place, heads turned in the direction of Anna. We were quickly escorted over to a well located table. Just a few moments later – then governor of New York, Elliot Spitzer entered the room and like everyone else…..gazed pro’vocatively at the TWS model.

  • Dave Naz: Anal Sex Love

    New Release

    .

The initial reaction of someone having sex with your wife or girlfriend is usually anger. Take jealousy out the equation and it is very erotic.

August 2007, Inspired by the model’s wardrobe, I hired a male model to shoot explicit photos with Oriana. I thought I would use the photos in an exhibit. At the time I didn’t have a clear idea what I wanted to shoot, but knew I’d work things out and see what worked best. I shot several set-ups with my RZ67 film camera and I could tell we were going in the right direction.

    Brian

After seeing the photos, we decided to continue the project. Much time was spent finding the right locations and clothing. There was a look we wanted to maintain using 50’s-70’s era furniture and stylish clothing: pantyhose and stockings, in particular. We wanted the photos to be very graphic and since this wasn’t going to be your typical, ‘porn’ shoot we agreed not to shoot vag sex. No artificial lube was used during the making of this project. It was all Oriana’s saliva.

    Sledge Hammer

Oriana & I would carefully pick the male models to shoot her with. They had to have a certain look and be well built. We hired some based on their wardrobe too. I would set up the shots and when things got comfortable for the guy, I’d get the good intimate stuff that looks like it’s just the two of them alone. Some of my favorite shots are the intense facial expressions—they are very real.

    Dirty Harry

All the models were tested for STDs within a month of the shoot. I documented this process, along with the other preparation with my 35mm film camera to give it a photojournalism look.

In 2010 we finished the project, knowing we took it as far as we could.

  • Ed Simmons: I Want To Go To Heaven

    Self Portrait By Ed Simmons

    Posted on October 28, 2010

……….Ed Simmons recently made the 3000 mile trip from Los Angeles to Philadelphia by train to visit his mom after the recent death of his father. He and I met earlier this year in happier times while we were producing an adult film in Los Angeles. This time around our mood was more somber. We met at The Drake Tavern to reminisce about the life and times of his dad. In his own words, Ed reflects on his fathers last wishes.

    Train Ride

……….My Father told my Mother this twice, during his last week with us, “something happened, something powerful”. Father Mac administered to my Dad, the Seventh Sacrament! I got a voice mail from him on September 12th, 2010; he said “Hi Eddie, how ya doing, OK, we have some ____ _____ for girls, OK, well I’m interested you know, ever since your Mother said to me, hahahaa, I am just a girlfriend, looking for someone to play house with. OK, I’ll see you around, I LOVE YOU” – TO ME!!!

    On The Way Home

He was a tough old marine. References to love was something always so hard for him to express to me. This was really something. Expressions using the word love were always so hard for him to hear from me too. He gave this gift to me, his last words, to me, from Dad. I always knew he did, he knew I always loved him too, Fathers and Sons, its complex!

    Road Crossing

Things were clean between us when he left 20 years ago, up in the Alaskan Bush. We worked it out. We had no choice. It felt not to much different than the two of us being locked up in a padded room. Flying back down into the lower 48, we became good friends! I wear his watch, I carry my money in his wallet now too. I know Dad got what he wanted, you know, like fine wine, he got better with time, I prayed tonight he got some time and was granted a one on one with God,

I bet he asked God if he would invite Mom in early. It just breaks my heart seeing her, watching her. In my soul, I know there is a special place in heaven for all those struck down by cancer. It has been a while for me to write anything on my blog. Its been hard. I’ve been a mess. Just too hurt to cry! I love you Mommy, don’t know where in the hell that came from. Face to face my last words to her were filled with the emotion of Love. I guess I had to tell her this once more, in those words, I felt she needed to hear it one more time from me. I probably will never see her again. Damn this trip has been hard on me. It has been even harder on my Mom.

  • In Memoriam: Tribute To Bob Guccione

    Jerry And Janelle: Penthouse Magazine

    Posted on October 25, 2010

……….I wasn’t very surprised when I heard that Bob Guccione died recently. I knew he was getting old. The last time I saw him in 2005, was a very memorable moment for me. I had been to his house in New York many times over the years. I usually would go there to deliver prints and meet with his ever present assistant Jane, who was like a family member to Bob and perhaps his closest associate at Penthouse. This time around Jane organized a meeting to meet with him directly to discuss a film project we were beginning to produce in Amsterdam.

I waited in the massive living room of the mansion feeling as though I was at the Metropolitan Museum of Art instead of a private residence. There were priceless Picasso’s, Degas, Renoir, you name it, all over the walls.

    Penthouse Magazine

Bob entered and greeted me with a smile, and he began our conversation by complimenting me about my work for the magazine and always encouraged me to continue to push the erotic envelope. I noticed right away that the once beautiful voice was reduced to barely a whisper, the result of a painful battle with throat cancer. Jane told me he had been fighting the disease for some time. Bob was always on the cutting edge of medical science and apparently found some elixir that prolonged his life for another five years. That’s typical of the kind of man he was, exploring and pushing the envelope of life to the very end. Bob may you rest in peace.
