……….The name he has left behind: Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina, the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, and a Jesuit. The name he has embraced: Francis. He will be the first Pope with this name. However, his name is not his only distinguishing factor. Francis marks a plethora of firsts for the Church, firsts that affirm the Church’s transformation and may give it a better grasp of today’s world.

Born in Buenos Aires in 1936, Pope Francis reportedly came in second when Benedict XVI was elected. However, he is still assuredly a man of the people. We like to imagine Popes as we imagine royalty, sitting in their lofty chambers, polishing their gold. On the other hand, we have our new Pope, a man who takes public transportation, labeled “a champion of the poor and most vulnerable among us” by President Obama.

Shining in the bright light of a new era, Pope Francis is the vehicle for change in many minds. People rest their hopes in him. However, it cannot be forgotten that he is still a Pope and therefore conservative by nature. While he represents many contradictions to the traditional Vatican, his core values still rest with conservative Catholicism. For example, when Argentina legalized gay marriage, in 2010, Bergoglio “encouraged clergy across the country to tell Catholics to protest.”

Seemingly light-hearted, making jokes during his inauguration for the whole world to hear, Pope Francis has the potential to change the course of history. We must now all wait and see what he chooses to do with this potential and hope that our world can benefit in the greatest way possible. As he said during his inauguration, “let’s pray for the world.”
