……….“ Do you. Whatever you’re doin’, just do you.” Pronounced with unhurried deliberation, these are the words of the Old School Shirt Makers founder Kevin Stewart, who attended Tony Ward’s Fashion & Photography class at Penn bringing along his latest designs, “The Hunter Collection.” Personifying the old adage “calm, cool, and collected,” Mr. Stewart certainly lives by his own advice.

He shared with students the details of his journey leading up to the present moment—his various positions as style director in the publishing industry, the turbulent years battling MS (he is currently in remission), and the decision to strike out on his own. His imperturbable composure and his anachronistic appearance, which was, in fact, recently licensed as “Professor Badass,” testify to the wisdom he has gained along the way.

After showing students his most recent collection in which he detailed his American inspirations from club collar to cocktail cuff, the class had a chance to photograph Stewart along with two models. A natural model in his self-possessed comportment, Mr. Stewart serves as an ideal brand ambassador.

The distinction of his own character is replicated in his designs. His shirts all feature western yoke stitching and a beautifully crafted logo. In an age of globalization, Stewart is a pioneer of American-made products. He advised students not to expand beyond reason—keep things manageable and retain the integrity of what you’re making.

Along these lines, ask him why he only works in cotton. He’ll tell you, “blacks, sharecroppers, poor whites have picked so much cotton in the country, we should own it!”

Stewart says he has no need to look outside America for inspiration, “there’s enough here.” If the words ‘elegance’ and ‘Americana’ seem antithetical to you, it’s time you meet the Old School Shirt Maker himself to set the record straight.
