……….”The scent of the department store is bringing me back!,” said Grandmom as we walked through the doors of Macy’s. It’s been years since my Grandmother has been to the mall. My sister and I decided to take her shopping to buy something new for a family holiday party we planned to attend just a few days after Christmas. She had a ball! After a few trips to the dressing room, she decided on a beautiful blue outfit, perfect for the holiday season. After running through Macy’s, we took her to Sephora where she was warmly welcomed by beauticians who tickled her pink with one compliment after the next! They couldn’t believe she is 91! She looks great for her age! She walked out of Sephora with Bare Essentials “Golden Fair” foundation, Tarte’s “Blissful” blush, and a couple samples of Chanel perfume. Until next time Gram…

Summer Gathering 1953

……….As the summer came to a close friends and family gathered together one last time to bask in the glory of the summer sun. Milt Ward was enjoying his successful career, as a commercial artist and amateur photographer. During the summer of 1953, Milt purchased a Studebacker, and proudly placed the family’s new vehicle in the background – of a number of his photographs during that time period. Like most of us, Milt also enjoyed material pleasures and recorded them with his camera.

Crabs and spaghetti were a staple at the Ward family picnics. As the summer season wound down, Jean Ward and her mother in law, Eva Sanders – made it a point – to revisit the picnic table for one last meal, before the leaves began to fall and the children returned to school.

……… In 1950, The Ward’s settled in to a modest contemporary duplex, with a more than ample backyard. The yard was the summer setting for many lawn parties, when the family wasn’t staying for prolonged visits at the shore. Mother became a well known cook amongst the neighbors in Elkins Park, so there was never a shortage of friends, relatives and neighbors stopping by for a bite to eat and drink.

Jobs were plentiful then. My father’s step brother See Sander’s landed employment as a letter carrier for the US Postal service. So when he stopped to visit his brother for one of the those summer parties, he decided to purchase the house next door. The middle class was in full swing and having a good time.
