A STREAM OF EMOTIONAL CONSCIOUSNESS

.

As much as we try to display to others our emotions through facial expressions or bodily movements, the actual experience of these emotions is inherently an individual and isolated process. Through this series of portraitures, I aim to visually capture metaphors for the feelings associated with experiencing happiness, love, sadness, and despair. With the incorporation of a bedsheet as a prop, the concept is to analogize it to the seemingly-physical and tactile nature of our emotional experiences. As a supplement to my photographs, I wrote the following four prose pieces to capture the mental states related to each of these emotions.

HAPPINESS

Shared happiness.

A dinner with family, a party with friends, a walk along the beach.

Hands entwined and swinging gently beside us. Playful tug of war with bedsheets.

Shared memories, perspectives, moments.

Laugh with them. Smile with them. Cheer with them. Hug them. Kiss them.

Happiness is a butterfly, flitting around our fingertips but just barely beyond our reach.

But when another pair of hands helps you catch that butterfly, it doesn’t seem to be that far off anymore.

LOVE

Completely wrapped up by you, but that’s okay.

My hands are tied, my heart is stolen, but that’s okay.

Because this is love, and nothing makes sense. Nothing has to make sense in love.

Anxious happiness.

Crazed optimism.

Foolish fearlessness.

Erratic passion.

Neurotic aspirations.

Obsessed dreams.

But that’s okay. Because this is love. And nothing should make sense in love.

SADNESS

The tug is gone. They are gone. No one is around.

The pull from another person has left. Sadness envelops me. There, there. Sadness is here.

After everyone has gone, after no one is left. Sadness will be here for you.

The weight pulls down on my shoulders. Sadness insidiously awaits, takes its time to take its toll.

Cry, my child. Let me comfort you. Let me embrace you.

Sadness will always be here for you.

DESPAIR

I’m fine. But I’m not.

Keep composure. Tangled, torn, trapped. I can’t breathe.

Pull yourself together. Something twists in my stomach. My chest feels heavy. I can’t escape.

Stop this. Tears stream down. The twisting snakes around my body. I want to scream but can’t.

Deep breaths. Nothing works. Everything falls apart. I brought this all onto myself. I can’t get out.

Ease ensnared entangled entrapped embarrassed ended

Dream despair damned depressed disillusioned desperate

Calm constricted constrained choked cornered can’t

Breathe battered bare broken busted burden

Alone.

Opening Event February 18, 2017

JED WILLIAMS GALLERY is proud and excited to announce its first showing of world-renowned erotic photographer TONY WARD.  JWG extends the spirit of Valentine’s Day by presenting a sexy, light-hearted visual romp through the work of one of the world’s preeminent photographers renowned for his explorations into EROTICA.  Ward will be exhibiting posters featuring photographs printed onto archival paper from high resolution digital files.  In a fresh new twist, JWG continues its adventurous forays into innovative curating by presenting its very first exhibit composed entirely of high quality photographic posters, created  by a master photographer.

Tony Ward’s photographs have been widely collected, exhibited and syndicated around the world. His unending quest for inspiring subjects and new projects compels him to divide his creative time between the diverse cosmopolitan centers of New York, Los Angeles, Miami, London, Paris, Hamburg/Berlin and his beloved Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Since opening Tony Ward Studio in 1984, Ward achieved global notoriety for his first published book on erotic photography, the controversial and highly praised OBSESSIONS. The monograph was followed by four more challenging and critically acclaimed volumes on photographic eroticism at the turn of the century. Scholars that specialize in the history and aesthetics of photography such as A.D. Coleman, Rick Wester and Reinhold Misselbeck have written illuminating essays that accompanied the artist’s published works.

Tony Ward has been teaching Photography courses at the prestigious University of Pennsylvania’s School of Design since the Fall of 2010. He currently offers an array of photo-centric works including image emblazoned clothing, original prints, private galleries for members only, and books by the artist.   In addition, via the artists web portal visitors can access galleries of leading artists who are affiliates of Tony Ward Studio by visiting: www.TonyWard.com.

Please join us for an opening reception February 18, 2017 from 5-7pm. Private press previews and artist studio visits are available prior to the opening by appointment only. Show runs from February 18-24 at Jed Williams Gallery,  615 Bainbridge St. Philadelphia.

Former Judge  Robert H. Bork, a former solicitor general, and acting head of the Justice Department at the time played a role in the Saturday Night Massacre, 1973, by agreeing with orders issued by then President Richard  Nixon, to fire Archibald Cox, special prosecutor appointed to the investigation of President Nixon and his involvement in the Watergate conspiracy. Bork was later nominated by President Ronald Regan on July 1, 1987 (after a promise made by President Nixon) to serve as an Associate Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. The U.S. Senate, with 54 Democrats, rejected his nomination after  very contentious senate hearings, 42-58. During the hearings Senator Ted Kennedy famously remarked:

“Robert Bork’s America is a land in which women would be forced into back-alley abortions, blacks would sit at segregated lunch counters, rogue police could break down citizens’ doors in midnight raids, schoolchildren could not be taught about evolution, writers and artists could be censored at the whim of the Government, and the doors of the Federal courts would be shut on the fingers of millions of citizens.”
