SimMen for clinical practice

The University of Pennsylvania’s School of Nursing is one of the many nursing schools that is currently using SimMen for clinical practices. Before students can go into actual hospitals, they are able to practice their skills in controlled environments such as Room 104.

Room 104 is very similar to a room in any hospital. The only major difference is that the patients in this room are simulation models and not real human beings. Even though these patients are only practice models, it is necessary to treat them like real patients.

The first simulation model happens to be a man and he is complaining of heart pain and trouble breathing. The model actually has a heartbeat and the nursing student can listen to the heart and hear that same sounds that would be heard in a human being’s heart.

The simulation models also weight about the same as an average human adult would. Their hands are very similar to human hands. Some of the models can even be programed to respond to touch. Student nurses also have an opportunity to practice complex procedures on these simulation models. Instead of making mistakes on people, these students can practice on the models and this will decrease the amount of mistakes made in healthcare facilities. This SimMan has had a tracheostomy performed. The Sim Man can do many fascinating things and many fascinating procedures can be performed on the Sim Man. However, the Sim Man’s most fascinating trait is his ability to respond to questions that you ask him!

Kinsey has loved swing music for the longest time, but she finally got to start learning how to swing dance last summer with the Lindy and Blues Organization in Philly.  She went to as many events as she could in order to pick up the skill she’s desired to learn since the age of thirteen.  Learning any skill presents challenges, and when she started, Kinsey felt really bad about asking people to dance with her because she was not very good, and did not want to ruin their good time.  With the desire to achieve her dream in mind, Kinsey pushed past all the missteps and the frustrated partners and kept practicing.  At summer’s end, Kinsey really started to develop a sense for swing dance.

By the time the school year rolled around, Kinsey decided to try out for UPenn’s West Philly Swingers.  After an intense tryout process, the West Philly Swingers welcomed Kinsey as one of their newbies.  With the Swingers, Kinsey found a close group of supportive people who share her love for swing dance.

Kinsey considers swing dancing to be her happy place.  She will have the privilege of choreographing a piece for the West Philly Swingers’ next show, showing how far she has come on her swing dancing journey.  She promises to always stay true to the love of swing dance.  According to her, nothing compares to the “feeling of dancing with a fantastic lead.”  Swing dance has become and invaluable part of her life, and any time she is having a bad day she can turn to swing dance to cheer her up.

Everyone has his or her own space. It’s often bottled up deep inside of oneself where few outsiders have ever seen, much less have access to. It is in this space where our deepest emotions truly lay: happiness when we recall a distant memory, silly random thoughts, our greatest frustrations, our worst moments, and our deepest fears. This space, if opened to the world, could put oneself in an uncomfortable position. Therefore, oftentimes when people attempt to initially find or interact with this space they see it in a different way: blank.

Allowing someone into this space is truly a courageous endeavor. It requires peeling back the outer layer of nothingness and diving deep into the confines of another human. What one encounters is never predictable as you are greeted with new discoveries at every turn. Yet, with each new finding, it somehow all begins to seem familiar. A worried face or an angry tick is suddenly reminiscent of your own and what you begin to discover is that everyone is not as different as they seem.

Oftentimes when met with the journey of entering such a space, I am filled with apprehension — What if I see something that scares me? What if I don’t find what I had hoped to? Can I handle this responsibility? Once the walls come down it is a frighteningly vulnerable moment that you must close your eyes for — but then you open them. Everything that once was empty and blank is filled. The walls are colored with fears and frustrations; the floors are lined with precious memories and each turn brings both joy and sadness. It is here where you truly begin to understand a person and it is in this space, when it is no longer blank, that defines who you are.
