Cats and Queens…Ufo’s and Other Things…

In his acid-glo hued silk screens and paintings on paper entitled; “Cats and Queens…Ufo’s and Other Things…”, Dean Rosenzweig synthesises the full spectrum of angst and glorious contemporary unreality. He revels in his stream of consciousness, intensely felt word-messages; and mixes this around with a street-art, graff-honed sense of hit or miss artistic directness which nevertheless reveals a more emotional, inner-centered side upon repeated viewing.
His works send a direct message to our subconscious by reveling in our current situation’s violent absurdity. He wields high key colors and patterns alike, harshly angled shapes like a complex knot of full graphic consumerism.
The messages he writes may be interpreted as poking fun at jingoism and our culture of violence, exactly by throwing them back onto us with histrionic gusto. This is art that is filled with day-glo, wild color rhythms and shapes; these images come from and yet jump over our over saturated, image excessive void.
But there is a very subtle pictoral and graphic/shape color sensibility at work here. “I can’t fall with you today but tomorrow is a definite maybe” is one of the more personal, poignant messages. Stenciled-out shapes denote generic seeming faces, spaceships and other sometimes tentatively sketched objects almost desperate seeming haikus of absurdity, marked down in a fake-casual way on a silkscreen skein of symbols and cultural icons. One feels the artist trying to reclaim a kind of personal mythos and emotional intimacy from the grinding death wheels of corporate media frenzy. Mixing and matching, pushing and pulling, expostulating and hiding—Dean Rosenzweig is an artistic rabble rouser and mystery poet.

For the past 15 years the artist has been residing in Berlin, Germany. He also spends considerable time making art in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and Los Angeles, California.
