A Small Plastic World
.
I really like collecting toys. I never outgrew the childhood habit; I just transitioned from Thomas the Tank Engines to Japanese figurines. Ever since high school I’ve been importing these toys from Japan and hunting them out at every convention or hobby store. They’ve become a collection to treasure, care for and maintain.
Each of these figures is modeled after a character from Japanese cartoons called anime. These characters range from superheroes to villains with every potential role covered. With so many actors, I found the greatest enjoyment from taking pictures of various figures interacting. They transformed my desk into a multi-dimensional stage. Characters never thought to be side by side allowed to interact here. Furthermore, the fact that the interactions I’ve photographed maybe unique to my collection always has excited me. While many people may have the same figures they might not have taken the same photos that I have.
As strange as they may appear these figures sincerely saved me. I had no drive or purpose before I started collecting these toys. Writing about my passion for these figures been the hardest aspect of this project actually. It’s very hard to explain how much I love taking pictures of these things without it coming off as awkward. Still whenever I’m stressed or overwhelmed I’ve used these toys to regain my composure. I hope to continue to grow this collection, to add to this little world that exists solely on my desk for the rest of my life.
