ELEVATION

.

First step; imagine this, you’re 18 with a bangin’ body and a lightweight brain.

Second step; now, turn around and you’re 50 plus with a not so lightweight body and a bangin’ brain.

Well, let’s see if my courage can match my feet and see where this one goes, shall we?

This is E L E V A T I O N.

Elevation is the mind, spirit and body.

She is a woman of a certain age.

She is a woman beyond the years so tender.

She is ME!

Women of a certain age are not trying to be in their 20’s or even trying to pretend to compete in the eyes of men aligned solely for youth.

There it is, that term; ‘women of a certain age’. Oh, sigh.

So, let’s explore. 

Okay, so is what elevation is completely based on sexuality, sensuality and scintillation?

It would be foolish to say it is and foolish to say that it isn’t.

I guess both halves of the whole are a part of what elevation is.

Being in some mythical lineup of long legs, buns of steel, and jugs of joy which haven’t been flirtatiously tapped by Father Time’s golden wand of gravity yet is not who I am.

Oh, so is that elevation?

Okay, maybe that might be it.

Or, is it a spiritual renewal or should I say reconnection with my own being.

Maybe the reconnection isn’t reconnection after all. It might be something far more exquisite; a first contact of my spirit that I have always avoided. Be it out of anxiety or fear.

Anxiety over having exuberance or an unseen joy, then thinking of the selfishness for being out ahead of my skis in hoping for that type of happiness for myself.

Fear of a conscious or unconscious thought of rejection if I said what I felt inside or acted upon my own desires for pursuing dreams beyond where I am situated.

Just give in…

Just let go….

Those are two thoughts that come to my mind.

Give in to what I want. Yet, what if I don’t know what I want.

I don’t mean being fickle or flaky, as if I can’t choose between chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry or even interest from the opposite sex towards me.

No, it’s that overarching ‘ask’ that probably the universe puts out there for me to answer of what I want from life or more importantly, from myself.

Expectations are a daunting thing to comprehend. And, as with the aspect of ‘want’ and ‘release’, I would say ‘expectation’ is that subject that can tip the balance of scales.

But, you know when I think of what is expected of me, as a woman is also mixed with that level of fear that can rise up in my backbone of obligation.

Expectation would be stark and purely rooted in base physicality; as obligation relies upon layers of depth.

Primal and callous hookup in a hotel room without strings and void of patience is what I think of as an expectation of me from another. Veneer ever so shallow of knowing this is in the end of a brief amount of conversation or dinner will end up with him trying to get me into bed.

And, if I’m being honest to that other person and more importantly to myself; that is not the type of woman I wish or hope to be.

Okay, so if the question that is asked of what I want; it comes to be something more than a ‘kitten’ and ‘rooster’ quickie that seems cold.

And, when I mean ‘cold’ I don’t mean there couldn’t be a feverish tumble in between the sheets. Oh, no, I mean vacant of emotion beyond him just getting off and using me as that warm body he’ll enjoy for a short while.

Yep, so I guess that is what I don’t want.

And, if I can say what I don’t want, it then shifts to what I do want.

Then there are men in this world that are evidence that there is something different which is offered. They afford me a path of ease without having to feel constantly in some seen or unseen perception of competition. So nice they are, I am relaxed and even have let my guard down during the give and take which is experienced with them.

On reflection I’d have admit it to myself; but I have had this feeling of obligation in showing a man’s kindness with actions and words of my own in return. That’s probably where I would make a misstep that could stem any furtherance of a relationship.

Let go. Yet, what if I release the reins I’ve held onto so tightly in the lane of self preservation all these years and what I’ve feared in my heart would come to pass?

Mocked and dismissed is what I fear, so my hands grip those reins as tight as I can hold to my core.

The fear of never really measuring up as a lover chills me to the marrow, as I’ve seen other women just swim effortlessly in emancipation’s intensity when it comes to being with a man.

You could say I’m like a door slightly ajar, open enough to be inviting to friends and strangers; but, not being exposed to the fullness that life holds.

The question that I hold in the back of my mind and stem of my soul is this: If I completely reveal myself sexually and spiritually, would there possibly be that crucial connection from another?

Conundrum is one way I could describe it, as taking that step to another level.

And yet, here I am grasping the brass knob and opening the door wider than I’d ever imagined.

This time in my life is my elevation of rising higher in spheres of relationships, from family and friends. But, more importantly, it is the exploration into other avenues of connection.

I know what I don’t want; casual hookups with a shrug of aftermath when departing a locale of liaison.

Never been into one-night stands when I was younger, and I sure as hell ain’t gonna start doing it now. That’s not me. That is not the woman I am.

The only thing about me that is casual is my wardrobe.

I know what I do want; something more than that.

I’m not a teenager, and I’m not in any way trying to be one. But, you know what; one thing which those that are younger have is that fearlessness in knowing they have their whole lives ahead of them. They don’t get bogged down in pessimistic perceptions of who they are and what stirs their exhilaration.

Okay, okay, I won’t play the ‘old lady’ card. But, wow, to be young, tight and full of flight can even make me stand on my tippy-toes to soar carelessly across the light fantastic. So, watch out, whippersnappers! (ha, ha)

You know as you go through life, as the days pass by and turn into years; you have those little interactions along the way. Chit-chatting here and there leads to one mutual dialogue of four words from my lips to whomever I’m talking with – ‘same old, same old’.

Question: Hey, how’s your life going?

Answer: Same old, same old.

Ugh, that wand of Father Time has whacked me on the ass with the SO-SO life! Whoa, that stings!

I know what I want, and it is something more than just same old, same old. But, then again, having a ‘so-so’ life is like a comfortable sweater or snuggly blanket of what one gets used to in keeping things on a thermostatic balance. Not too hot, not too cold. Just so-so.

My predictability has become that two-edged thorn that pricks me from time to time. One side is positivity of being a person that can be relied on, based on my patience, adaptability, and calm demeanor. But, that second side is a bit more tenuous in explaining the downside of being a person that is predictable. In some ways, that predictability is like having my feet planted in cement; for I can be perceived as being not a sprig of spontaneity, but a reed of regularity. 

Yet, life as we live it right now is happening all around us. And, a tiny sledgehammer is coming out of my back pocket to chip away at that cement of caution, as my hips start to sway and my arms begin to embrace enchantment.

Waiting for another to capture that spark from within is a fool’s errand. And, my parents didn’t raise a fool. (Knock wood on that fact) So, I guess I’m claiming that spark for myself. For me – hooray!

Exploring what flips my switch and ignites my motor is the journey that I am on. I’m not speeding down an unseen road, but coasting along at a speed of moderation taking in all that my eyes and soul can seek and absorb along the way.

So, what have I learned as that half century point has spun like golden thread on the spinning wheel of my life?

Desire doesn’t fade and the adventure of life can be filled with possibilities and exploration in coming moments, months, or years.

Some who may be reading this are probably thinking when I use those two words ‘possibilities’ and ‘exploration’; would snap to the conclusion of what I’m referencing is a whom.

Oh no! Although, if the universe is listening; hey, you never know.

Possibilities can go from learning the basics of a new language to diving headlong into off-beat subjects that may peak my interest. Or, even just as tiny a goal of losing another ten pounds and keeping it off. (Fingers crossed and brownies scratched off my shopping list)

Exploration can be as varied as updating my fashion style with a few accent pieces here and there; to hitting bookstores for some paperbacks or heftier fare.

Trying out some new recipes or even letting my taste-buds go on an unknown escapade of flavors. Who knows? The world’s an open kitchen!

Aspects of each have a way of going from that which is non-consequential to the beneficial in the big picture of my life.

I believe there is always room for improving oneself; even when you might not see it in the moment you change something about yourself.

For me, it’s in the knowing that desire that fills my soul and keeps this heart within me beating fast when I accomplish or learn something new is that feverish sense of fulfillment.

As for that fulfillment, it doesn’t have to appear as a connection from an outside insertion inward, but an internal blossom outward from within myself.

May not be that inferno of decades past. Yet, that flame still remains. It smolders. It lingers. It sizzles. It flickers.

Flickering….oh, flickering….and, even those embers that remain are perpetually tickling.

To my own surprise, I am rising! I am exploring! I am elevating to that next level! I may not know what awaits me around the next corner, but my embrace is in a single direction – upward!

DO RIGHT, WOMAN! – A TRAVESTY IN TWO ACTS

ACT TWO

So, as bad as Trump is, the female ‘himpathizers’ who coddle and collude (oh, yes, that word I shall use) with him in the debasement and depression of women’s liberties are the conniving canines feasting on the bones of other women.

When the most powerful man in the world, The President of the United States of America publicly humiliates, shames and heaps scorn upon women with such damning satisfaction in tone and timber; then, only one conclusion becomes most apt. 

I guess it could be chalked up to this; what happens when a pompous politician and misogynist is actually one in the same.

This is a step far beyond just male chauvinism. No, this is an insidious tide of creeping hatred and control that certain men in power express in their words and actions that affect every person.

To hear a person that is called out for being (pick your poison, pick your choice) and responding back as saying:

Well, some of my best friends are…

Well, my Mother is a woman…..

Then to my way of thinking, we got’s a helluva problem! It’s not your circle of buddies, or the woman who gave birth to you. This is another kettle o’ fish all together that I’m stirring up.

Cornell University professor of Philosophy, Kate Manne has unpacked the issue of misogyny in her book titled, “Down Girl: The Logic of Misogyny”(18), published by Oxford University Press in 2018. In her book, Kate Manne argues that misogyny is the controlling, policing, punishing, and exiling of the “bad” women who challenge male dominance.

Having coined the term ‘himpathy’(19), Manne explains the level of alignment some men have in giving an overarching empathy for a man in a position of power whenever it comes to dismissing a woman’s accusation. Furthermore, they are often met with misogynistic hostility and may be characterized as pushy, shrill, nasty, or abrasive, among other possibilities.

Doesn’t that word ‘nasty’ sound like one which is favored most by a certain man in the Oval Office? Oh, most definitely he uses it like a clinging safety blanket to make himself feel all that more superior to that certain type of woman who doesn’t behave the way he wishes.

Manifesting that ‘himpathy’, is not just for another man in some cockeyed need of a life preserver being tossed for a face-saving salvation, but Donald Trump’s own hunger for self-control, silencing, and self-maintenance of an oh, too precious ego.

And, THIS is what I mean with that unmistakable vibe coming from that cadre of misogynists – “Do right, Woman!”

Yet, any woman worth a grain of salt will never be silent. And, as for yours truly, my salt shaker is shaking as is my upheld fist shaking in a righteous rage.

Okay, okay; before anybody gets their hackles up and pushes back with putting forward that he has a great cheering squad when it comes to women. You have to ask yourself the question of exactly which women they are.

Some wonder why certain women support him. Well, it damn sure isn’t because he’s singing from the hymnbook of sunshine, candy hearts, and chivalry.

I guess there are many reasons why some women support him. Then again, it also depends on which groups of women they actually are.

There are the ones who are seated at the table and the ones that are the servers. In the catbird seat are those taking their heralded spot in bringing a certain cache of influence to the tantrum twit. As for those who serve the table, they bring their votes to re-elect the rampagin’ ruffian from Queens.

And, yes – the women who will do anything to stay in his good graces are also clawing to keep the status quo for themselves. So, as bad as Trump is, the female ‘himpathizers’(20) who coddle and collude (oh, yes, that word I shall use) with him in the debasement and depression of women’s liberties are the conniving canines feasting on the bones of other women.

To shine the spotlight beyond the man in the center ring of this Cirque de Callousness, one must take a look at some of those females who jubilantly clasp onto his torch of incinerating the aspirations, rights, and franchise of other women.

One of which is the Governor of Alabama, Kay Ivey.

As an ‘ethical’ woman, Governor Kay Ivey can say ‘it is what it is’ with that demure Southern grace in reaction to a Presidential tirade in her state over NFL players, mostly African-American who decide to take a knee as a sign of protest against racism, and then add the fact of Alabamians being ‘patriotic’(21) to boot.

Well, patriotism isn’t the catch-all for constructing a false narrative for freedom of speech; just like Kay Ivey’s catch-all of draping herself in Christian values as a victory banner for protecting freedom of religion(22).

In her walk of faith, I wonder if doing a denigrating ‘blackface’(23) skit exemplifies her set of beliefs. But, I digress and let the black paint she smeared upon her face at Auburn University’s Baptist Student Union tell the dirty truth for itself.

Alas, what makes this Governor of a Southern state most despicable in a signing the most restrictive abortion law(24) in America, is that she is a woman.

But then again, it goes back to getting into what kind of woman(25) Alabama Governor Kay Ivey and other supportive ‘himpathizers’ of Donald Trump are.

An increase in donations(26) from women to his 2020 campaign have shown a propensity of being non-phased over the nauseating portrait this man proudly displays day in and day out.

Then there are the women in positions of permanence, whether serving formally or informally. Be it from a think tank, networking activism to a solidified union of duality in both the Administration and the bliss of marital ties. They are the 365 Ladies that will always land on their feet in being graced with the tainted glitter of appeasing a cruel leader.

Of course, there are the women that trot out before the cameras with coquettish compliance in defending the crumbs discarded from his golden throne; in an act that would make Ira Levin chuckle in concurrence.

Presidential counselor, Kellyanne Conway and the former White House Director of Strategic Communications, Mercedes Schlapp (current Trump 2020 aide) have been the faces of serenity under the careful care of 24/7 news cycles, which most of us have seen or heard as they’ve defined, diverted, defended and deflected on behalf of Donald Trump.

Kellyanne Conway and her husband, George are well known Washington figures, as are the up and coming ‘it couple’(27) of Mercedes and Matt Schlapp, whom by the way is the chair of the American Conservative Union.

Propagandists tell of ‘alternative facts’(28) surrounding a puny inaugural size and an imagined ‘massacre’(29) to shift criticism over a Muslim ban(30) with steadfast backbone and a straight face. Along with Conway’s tongue-twisting word salad, are Schlapp’s defense of a cruelest(31) of comment aimed at a then gravely ill Arizona Senator John McCain and proclaiming the compassion(32) of the President in the face of a ruthless chant; proves each of their breathless cravenness in the swamp that is Trumpland.

In the chorus of the Trumpettes, there is also press secretary for re-election Kayleigh McEnany, who calmly says that a man who lies as easily as he blinks his eyes doesn’t ‘lie’(33) to the American people.

But, for me what is a whopper of a defense for the lies of this man is from White  House Director of Communications, Stephanie Grisham, who explains his untruths in some sort of  jujitsu way he ‘communicates’(33), which comes off so unorthodox that it obscures his ‘love for this country’.

Well, then if anyone takes what is said by them earnestly, the next logical conclusion is; up is down, black is white, and the gas-lighting has taken all of our common sense, sanity and sight.

In comparison to those that propose lines of falsehoods and outright lies to the public which seems most corrosive; are the policy pushers who are far more destructive than any doe-eyed diva that peddles the party line of pabulum.

Under the radar and in the shadows of the spotlight’s glare, are some within the administration that are in the process of reversing progress on issues involving primarily the breadth of women’s hard fought rights.

Policy pushers are the stealth steamroller in Trump’s misogynistic offensive against the legislative infrastructure that has been built up brick by brick over many decades.

“There is a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women” – Madeleine Albright, former Secretary of State, United States of America(34)

Taking a brief glance at three women who have a seat at the table of cache are Trump cabinet secretaries Elaine Chao and Betsy DeVos.

Lastly, the third person on this brief list of influencers is Dr. Diane Foley. Now, there is a name many people are probably not too familiar with. Well, I’ll get back to telling you about her a bit later.

First woman in the Trump lineup is Elaine Chao, Secretary of Transportation.

Having been Secretary of Labor in the administration of George W. Bush and now current Secretary of Transportation, no one will deny that Elaine Chao is a very accomplished woman. Saying that, she is not above being taken to task for her performance when it comes to the intersection of varied interests.

Being married to Majority Leader of the United States Senate, Mitch McConnell, Elaine Chao and her husband are one of the nation’s most prestigious couples. Hooray for love!

Yet, that same prestige holds the keys of conflicted interests that have the power to affect the balance of fairness to anyone who isn’t granted the seat at the table which the Secretary of Transportation holds.

Pet projects for her husband’s state of Kentucky have been prioritized in getting almost $78 million (35) in grants, as a she’s designated a ‘special liaison’ through her position as Secretary of Transportation.

Whiffs of other conflicts of interest seem to touch upon things that are all in the family for Secretary Chao and her husband, who have proficiently advocated for the Trump administration’s tax bill; not boasting publicly that a transformation of the tax code into a territorial system would benefit her family’s foundation and shipping business.

Never disagreeable in public, Elaine Chao has a consistent ability to brush off the dismal disposition of her boss and rise above it all.

Take for example, when Secretary Chao remarked to reporters after Donald Trump spoke about ‘fine people on both sides’, she later quipped at that same press conference in the lobby of his gilded NYC tower that “I stand by my man..(36)” which she then gave brief pause and added, “both of them”. At the time between the first five words before that pause, some wondered which man; Her President or Her Husband?

She wasn’t repulsed in the moment of his heartless equivocation and did not resign. She did the old soft-shoe and quipped to reporters when asking her thoughts on what was said by President Trump.

To be honest, it didn’t matter which of the two men she stands by, because she sure as hell wasn’t standing with Heather Heyer(37) or anyone else of us who treasures progress.

I’ll applaud in giving it to the women of this administration on their ability to definitely remain consistent. Yep, they are consistently vicious in standing behind lurid leadership from out of that top office.

In moving onto the next lady in the administration’s lineup, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos, I’ll start by taking you back a ways on how her feelings for the man who hired her have changed with the title she possesses at this moment in time.

I guess DeVos’ description back in 2016 as Donald Trump as him being an ‘interloper’ who ‘does not represent the Republican Party’ (38) is irrelevant now, for now as President of the United States of America, everything he says, is and does is the Republican Party.

Betsy DeVos is HIS Secretary of Education.

Part of the permanence class, Betsy DeVos and her family have a long history of ‘investing’ in a fostering of a conservative philosophy with an emphasis on smaller government and that nebulous term ‘traditional American values’.

Funny thing when some people talk about limiting the size of government, they are the ones first in line who have their hands out for a position or financially flourishing arrangement with that same ‘bloated’ government. 

In her own words involving opposition to reforming campaign finance spending, Betsy DeVos unashamedly admitted what she desired in exchange(38)  for putting more than a few coins in the cans of needy candidates.

The United States Department of Education oversees that federal civil rights law known as Title IX, which Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos has been in the rapid process of reversing (39) policy guidelines, including the cancellation of supportive policies of affirmative action, disabled, and LGBTQ rights.

Enacted in 1972(40), Title IX was an addendum to the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964, signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson. It has been one of the pillars of progress within the past century.

Although most of the times when the subject of Title IX has been in the media spotlight when it comes to the field of sports, the actuality of the law is far more expansive than beyond athletics. This includes the area of sexual assault and harassment, in which cases before the Supreme Court have been ruled as each being a form of discrimination based on sex.

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos’ proposals and processing of guidelines are not moving us forward, but propelling us backwards through the decades of institutional gains.

Trump’s turgid tide is more than just a mumble, grumble or multiplicity of rambling howls leveled towards any woman he furiously wishes to crush.

If only it were that simple to ignore what he says and just shrug it off for the sake of his having freedom of speech as we all do.

Yet, when those words come from a President’s lips and actions signed by his pen transform into statutes that will take some of us back to the past; then that’s when truth has to rise and reveal.

Beyond the person in the Oval Office, there are members of the Administration who are running parallel in that race of regression of regulations, which happen to mostly affect women.

When an ideology encroaches on another person’s autonomy then those solemn footsteps of oppression begin to march upon us.

Now, let me introduce you formally to Dr. Diane Foley. As deputy Assistant Secretary in the Department of Health and Human Services, Dr. Foley(41) is in charge of the Office of Population Affairs.

Before you start to snooze off when hearing about this somewhat stealth cog in the Trump Administration’s governmental bureaucracy, I would advise you to STOP and WAKE UP to realize the programs which the Office of Population Affairs runs in distributing federal grants across the country.

I, as a woman who was already awake, is more woke now than I was before the moment that hand of his was placed on that bible on January 20, 2017.

Cacophonies come and cacophonies go, but one thing which the current man who sits in the Oval Office has done is turned on the flashing red light of warning to the Constitution and the uprooting of democratic principles.

Public Law 91-572, comes under the direction of the United States Department of Health and Human Services.

But, you may wonder what a stale and staid code could possibly have to do with the attempted reversal of autonomy for women in the United States.

Although, its’ official name is Public Law 91-572, it is more broadly recognized as Title X.

Title X is the Family Planning Program, which was signed into law by President Richard M. Nixon in 1970, as part of the Public Health Service Act.

Noted at the time when he signed this piece of legislation, this Republican president praised the bipartisan support for this bill. Yes, it was THAT Richard M. Nixon who was the man who placed his signature onto parchment.

In fact, the beginnings of the aspects of this program went back to 1965 as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty, providing assistance to low-income families in need of birth control with federal subsidies.

Title X’s services allow reduced and no-cost access to those uninsured or at a lower scale of income, with an overall purpose to promote positive health outcomes.

A vast array of services distributed under funding through Title X include sexual education, counseling, treatments and screenings for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV); as well as screenings for breast and cervical cancer. 

Birth control, pregnancy diagnosis, and pregnancy counseling are also under the umbrella of areas covered under the program.

There is one aspect of family planning which opponents of a specific procedure cling to with a virulent extent on the verge of obsession.

A B O R T I O N!! – And, that’s the word that rings the blaring bell of ideology in such a Pavlovian pitch from the aforementioned Dr. Diane Foley.

Publicly, when it goes to the subject of abortion, the name of a single entity comes to the forefront. Yet, in reality, Planned Parenthood is legally prohibited from using any federal funds for abortions.

“Many politicians still act as though the top threat to our national security is Planned Parenthood”- Madeleine Albright, former Secretary of State, United States of America(34)

Any abortions which Planned Parenthood, Planned Parenthood Affiliates or their associated clinics provide are privately funded.

Now, that’s where the policy, politics, and essence of ideological extremism intertwine in the implementation or cessation of grants.

Dr. Diane Foley controls the Title X program and has the discretion in deciding which organizations and groups are given the federal grants.

Going a little deeper on who Dr. Foley is, takes a turn down the road of her background of being the former president of Life Network, which is an operator to a pair of crisis pregnancy centers.

Colorado-based, Life Network has a mission statement on their website which includes the following: ‘life affirming alternatives to abortion’.

They call themselves ‘pro-life’, while I consider them ‘anti-choice’.

We all can believe whatever we wish based on whatever reasoning; from religion to science, or maybe nothing at all. But, to clasp a legal right from another adult is smothering that other person’s choice to do whatever they wish to do with their own body.

In that vein, those who operate crisis pregnancy centers (otherwise known as CPCs)(42) are only posing as health providers. Yet, they do not provide effective family planning, even including birth control. Or, have only non-medical staff on the premises.

Life Network prioritizes abstinence only sexual education, while leaving the full spectrum of sexual information out of their talk they give to needy women who come to them for assistance and counseling.

Private beliefs of a private citizen are one thing; but, when those same beliefs of a public person in the position to control policy and the federal funding for an essential program of health services for women and men, then that borders on something tiptoeing towards a theocracy(43).

In a 2016 speech at Charis Bible College, Dr. Diane Foley remarked on the subject of abortion with this: “a battle that is happening in the heavenly realms that Satan doesn’t want to lose.”(44)

Being appointed in 2018, Dr. Foley did not have to go through the process of being confirmed by the United State Senate, which would have had given her views extensive, public scrutiny.

Dr. Diane Foley’s extreme views were raised forward by United States Senator from Washington Patty Murray(45) in a letter(46) to fellow Senators, when she was being appointed to serve as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Population Affairs at the Department of Health and Human Services.

What is revealed by a memo(47) prepared by the Democratic staff of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee are some of Foley’s beliefs; such as seeing everything through “a biblical worldview,”(11-memo) to making unfounded conclusions about women who have had abortions, as to ‘shut down their emotions and become very cold and unapproachable’”.(13-memo)

You probably figure as a virulent opponent of abortion as Dr. Foley is, she would be a rejoicing cheerleader for women to place children born from an unplanned pregnancy up for adoption. But, oh you don’t know Diane. She believes adoption is ‘a double death’; not based on reality, but her thinking of the ‘interruption of a parent’s plan’ and the adopted child feeling ‘abandoned’. (24 -memo)

In 2019, she is now the person who is final arbiter of doling out the entirety of Title X funding for all persons who participate in this vital program.

It is an example of when misogyny and policy mix into an elixir of debasement, brewed from a caustic well of inflexible ideology.

And, it just happens that a woman is the tool or in this case the straw of bitterness which stirs the cocktail of poison which other women will have to swallow or remain parched in maintaining any droplet of dignity and governmental rights.

“Show some respect for me” – Aretha Franklin

Those five words are contained within a classic melody from 1967 titled “Do Right Woman”, which came to my mind when I began to write this article. As the unexpected dichotomy of The Queen of Soul’s heartfelt grace and the occupant of the White House’s depravity of any shred of gravitas peppered my psyche, a sole punctuation took the stage.

With the use of a comma between the three words of ‘Do Right Woman’(48), that hymnal reverie of Aretha Franklin’s angelic voice singing lyrics of a Chips Moman and Dan Penn penned song, the tone of this travesty in motion is re-imagined in an acrid aria of male orthodoxy with my title of “Do right, Woman!”

For me, those lyrics held in this spiritually affirming tune means so much beyond anything on an envisioned scale of a romantic back and forth of her to him or him to her; but for how we all as human beings should have that mutual bond of respect for one another. Because, if we don’t exchange and confer that equal level of parity within the human family; then we will sink in a morass of our own disillusion.

For those lacking the compunction within their heart and the touch of humanhood isn’t in your soul, as if you feel that you can’t meet the mutuality; then I’ve got one thing I’d like to leave you with – just go and tweet ya’ self!

Eroticism Wins

This time last year I was debating if I should take photos with Tony Ward or not. I  am so happy I decided to do it! I did not listen to one person that told me it was a bad idea because of social judgment. It was one of the most freeing things I’ve done in my adult life.

 I even ended up in his current photography book on two pages! There are a slew of other famous professional models in the book, as well as other impressive creative’s. That was pretty cool on its own, but getting to blog about my life with no restrictions might have saved me.

I SAVED MYSELF by writing and getting out what I was going through at the time. Being real in the things I was talking about got a lot of attention from people I have not heard from in years. Thanking me for choosing topics no one talks about, but everyone can relate toI have Tony to thank for that. Many people call him a mentor. I absolutely see why including myself now. He lives life exactly the way he wants to despite stigma, encourages people to be free, and find that thing that gives you inner peace. Now I am lucky enough to say that about myself. I always loved to cook and be fit, that brought me confidence in the way I lookbut it did not give me inner peace.  

Everyone sees bloggers on vacations, free products they receive, and eating at the nicest places in the best outfits. I never thought that spilling my roller coaster of life events would touch so many people. In fact I was expecting the opposite response

As time passed I got out a lot of things that bothered me. I cut my drinking in more than half. I was the epitome of a train wreck with everything I had dealt with in the last five years. This new hobby really made me understand once you find your PASSION destructive behavior is no longer appealing.

 It also made me realize decision making sober is emotionally fucking taxing. I still have a few drinks now, but I was polishing off bottles of wine and whiskey like they were waterI was very quick to dismiss people that no longer suited me. I am more tolerant now and have learned patience. Well, more than I had before ha!

After writing about myself for the better part of the year; I turned my focus to friends who went through major life changes following their dreams. Happiness is more important to them than being in a career path they hated. 

That led me to Derek Bailey. We came across each other on Instagram.  When I saw what he was doing I immediately asked to interview him. Derek agreed and welcomed any positive press for his new green car innovation. That interview will be published as soon as his car gets to the U.S. 

Tony will actually be taking the photo for that one. Another pretty dope thing; a famous photographer wanting to take photos for something I have written!

Derek liked my interview so much he proposed it be turned into a video podcast sponsored by his car company

Whether or not that ends up happening the fact he is in a different realm of business, and a leader in green automotive technology was quite the compliment. He is in the business of building businesses and making people money. Maybe I have written enough to not only have this be a rewarding hobby; but possibly one day a new career path. 

A year writing for Tony Ward Studio does a mind, body, and soul good.

I hope you all find the same inner peace.

If you don’t like this country, you can leave” – President Donald J. Trump

Progression or regression is a question to ponder for the man in that ultimate position of power which controls the shifting scales that can shape people’s lives.

Now, words have meaning, as anyone who is reading this right now knows. But, that alignment of callous words to calculated actions leads to the parallel pummeling of the powerless.

The hidden position papers and policy prescriptions which have been neatly drawn up and folded in the breast pockets of those who have been salivating for dismantling of many laws and governmental guidelines have now exposed their transparency into the full glare of their gluttonous ambitions.

With this Administration and their acolytes, one can focus on the entire panoply of corrosive policies; which would definitely be quite lengthy.

Yet, for the man at the helm of this chaotic cyclone veering towards 2020, that added pep in his step, scathing scowl upon furrowed brow, and rip of a remark seems to always be directed towards a certain kind of person.

Hey, people back then said he can’t be judged by this remark to a political opponent. After all, that was only a one-time thing, of him saying something like this right? I mean, after all he was only a nominee saying something off the cuff. Besides, if he were President of The United States, he wouldn’t be saying things like this.

Would he?

Geez, it’s a funny thing to know that a snake don’t change his skin. And, what is even funnier to know is that female leader of a demographically approved country (by his own bleached standards) even tosses around the word ‘absurd’(1) when it involves him.

This man’s rancid rabidity when it comes to speaking about, of, and towards women directly goes to that stern adage of a perverse thirst to make a woman behave.

Specifying it in more blunt terms: Do right, Woman!

“Do right, Woman!”, seems that silent scream of a command from the lips and attitude which seeps from corners of those feeling their maintaining of control upon the expression and expansion of all which is a feminine rising is slipping from their patriarchal grip of displeasure.

Schoolyard bullying is taken to that extra level of verbal taunting with his miserable mocking that he constantly and ever so consistently uses.

Before going any further, I guess you have to go back a bit to the cornerstone which Donald J. Trump himself used to get a foothold on his campaign to achieve the Republican nomination in the first place.

This is way, way, way before the downward escalator in his gilded tower with his Missus next to him and broad-brushing Mexicans as being ‘criminals and rapists’. Uh-uh, this is his inane obsession with promoting that conspiratorial lunacy of ‘birtherism’, like some backwater carnival barker who drools with satisfaction at hearing his own mouth run like the Mississippi River.

Just to touch on this subject for a moment, I wanted to touch on the ramifications to the crumbling civility in the public sphere and also a lack of giving any compassion to the personal toll taken on a family.

A former First Lady of the United States of America opened up in her memoir on how Donald Trump’s asinine antics put her family’s safety(2) at risk.

“Donald Trump, with his loud and reckless innuendos, was putting my family’s safety at risk. And for this I’d never forgive him.” – Michelle Obama, 2018

And, instead of taking a road a bit higher than the sewer in not responding to Mrs. Obama’s candid concerns, he mustered up the cesspool’s tide with venom in going after her(3) and the former President of the United States, Barack Obama.

Now, that nexus of race and sex goes to the pulse of who this man is when he gets going after women; with an added emphasis of erratic teeth-mashing on specifically those of color.

Maxine! Maxine! Maxine!

Outspoken and unbroken by the barrage of being called ‘seriously low IQ’(4), ‘crazy’, ‘extraordinarily-low IQ’, and ‘unhinged’ by him; United States Representative from California, Maxine Waters is the Chairwoman of the House Financial Services Committee. In other words, this besmirched woman has the investigative instruments and the power of subpoenaing documents from one, Donald J. Trump.

Wow, I guess her IQ is high enough to go deep beneath his house of cards and pull the weeds that lay at its’ crumbling foundation.

In his line of verbal fire no woman is safe, including the highest ranking female politician in the United States of America. By the way, this phenomenal woman is also third in line of Presidential succession.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi from California has been vicious tagged by him as being Crazy Nancy, Nervous Nancy, MS-13 Lover Nancy Pelosi, and High Tax/High Crime Nancy Pelosi.

Foolish is the man who demeans the person holding back the people in her own caucus who wishes to begin an impeachment inquiry upon him. Yet, HE is who HE is.

United States Senator from Massachusetts Elizabeth Warren, a woman of plans and substance; has been chided by the man of vile intent and villainous grin with ‘goofy’, ‘the Indian’, and as commonly as he huffs and puffs, ‘Pocahontas’.

Not to mention Senator from California Dianne Feinstein hurled with belittlement of being ‘sneaky’, and Senator from New York Kirsten Gillibrand being stained with his sexual innuendo of doing ‘anything’(5) for a campaign contribution.

Candidate for Governor of Georgia, Stacey Abrams is referred to as ‘crime loving’(6) by a man who still has not apologized for taking out a full-page advertisement(7) in the New York Times calling for the death penalty surrounding an event in New York City in 1989.

Although he may deny there is no correlation in adoption of the death penalty as a punishment for those five young black and Latino men who are collectively referred to as “The Central Park Five”, the largest-type font usable (view the image for yourself) in the newspaper advertisement(7) read the following words: “BRING BACK THE DEATH PENALTY”; the timing of Trump’s ad buy was not coincidental. 

“You have people on both sides of that,” – President Donald J. Trump, June 2019, referring to his lack of apology concerning the Central Park Five. (Not to be confused with another statement about ‘both sides)

Wow, ‘both sides’, that sounds familiar in his description of another event on a Saturday in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017.

But, even further with his own past history (8) of the Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice filing a lawsuit over racial discrimination (which is a crime after all) in October 1973 against Trump Management Company, his father Fred, and himself; Donald Trump still carelessly tosses a racial grenade in the direction of a woman of color with a sense of obliviousness in describing her as being ‘crime loving’.

Tossing things is nothing new for this President; from barbs of sarcasm to paper towels tossed like he could only wish in his most delusional fantasies were a three-pointer.

Even in the middle of past and oncoming natural disasters, the man bloviates with contempt and non-concern over fellow citizens in the path of devastation in calling the Mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico Carmen Yulin Cruz ‘incompetent’(9).

To disparage Mayor Cruz in one tweet and then praise himself as a heavenly savior in another  displays the essence of heartlessness from this man.

“I’m the best thing that’s ever happened to Puerto Rico!” – President Donald J. Trump

When talking heads kind of offhandedly say that California Senator Kamala Harris has been ‘fortunate’ for not having a ‘pet name’ given to her by that person of pith; does anyone really believe that in private that he doesn’t call her something starting with the fourteenth letter or second letter of the alphabet, when talking about her.

And, when he says Kamala; it comes out of his mouth sounding like he’s uttering Ebola. Check it out for yourselves the next time he has a rally and listen to his syllabic pronunciation of her first name, because of course he never calls her Senator Harris or even says her last name barely at all.

Going further, even during those solemn moments of giving honor to one of America’s fallen heroes the level of sniping can never be curbed by the occupant of that hallowed office.

When the body of a fallen American soldier, Sgt. La David Johnson’s body returned to The United States and a person spoke on behalf of the heartbroken widow, Myeshia Johnson (10) as to the lack of empathy or courtesy from the man in the Oval Office; he just had to twist the knife once more in battling with the retelling of a specific event.

United States Representative from Florida, Frederica Wilson just wasn’t some wayward Janey-on-the-spot politician speaking off the cuff for the family of the fallen soldier, but, a woman who actually knew the dead soldier and his loved ones for many years.

Most persons would be the bigger person, while taking the criticism and taming their tongue.

But, that didn’t stop the President of The United States of America, Donald J. Trump from labeling her as ‘wacky’(11).

And to think, this boorish back and forth with a widow was within the ten months of the Trump Presidency in October of 2017.

(Author’s update: In ceremonies performed across the United States in August 2019, The United States Army has posthumously honored three valor awards to U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Dustin Wright (Silver Star)(12), U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Jeremiah Johnson (Bronze Star)(13), and U.S. Army Sgt. La David Johnson (Silver Star); for their valiant service during an ambush in Niger on October 4th, 2017)

In an awarded citation for the late Sgt. La David Johnson, it noted his ‘courage and dedication to his team’(14).

From where I stand, maybe if Donald Trump truly wanted to ‘make America great again’, he’d pay attention and selfless tribute to those who have made and paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms. This includes those that are left behind among those living when heroes are laid to a final rest.

Now, moving from one appalling aspect to another is his current rage focused against The Squad (15), a quartet of Congresswomen. New York’s Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Massachusetts’ Ayanna Pressley, Rashida Tlalib, and Minnesota’s Ilhan Omar are his latest targets of disdain.

Trump’s wraith towards the first two Muslim women elected to the Congress has been almost unspeakable. But, for what comes out of his mouth, it’s just another day, another slur, another lesson in cruelty.

Nothing is sacred to this man of cruel intentions, including a twitter jab at the grandmother (16) of Representative Rashida Tlalib and scoffing at the Congresswoman’s tearful regret at not visiting her.

“The only real winner here is Tlaib’s grandmother. She doesn’t have to see her now!” – President Donald J. Trump

All four of these women of color ARE citizens of the United States of America. Three of them were born here and the fourth was born in Somalia.

Oh, by the way, Somalia is in Africa. The way President Trump has spoken of countries within Africa as being ‘shitholes’, it is obvious of his feelings towards anyone born or emigrated from there.

For this man who came into office and made a Muslim travel ban and immigration his hot-button hallmarks of a tornado’s tirade, Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar is the perfect storm.

She is a physical symbol some may see as being ‘the other’, based on her shade of skin, her religion, and sadly to say it, her hijab.

Oh, and I’m not going to go down the rabbit hole of chasing down her words or starting the strain of condemnation. That would be letting the man who leads campaign rallies filled with sycophantic fervor and name-calling off the hook.

Trump tramples everything in his wake, as a baseline criticism of a Congresswoman who is a woman of color has to be taken over the edge and down into the vitriolic valley.

Damn straight! That is where I’m going.

When supporters at his campaign rally started the “SEND HER BACK!” chants aimed at Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, he stood there for over 10 seconds and took in those cheered words. Okay, so he didn’t say that hateful chant, but after a few days of responding to journalists asking about his reaction, Trump let loose with the xenophobic trope(17) which is always used to deflect against any verb or noun of criticism. 

“If you don’t like this country, you can leave” – President Donald J. Trump

Well, well, I guess from zero to a zillion his rage has to go. Not just silence does he want, but also obedience to his own unitary view of patriotism.

It is a blind man’s folly to follow any leader without qualm or questioning them; for, it might not be the brighter horizon that they may take us all towards, but off an unseen cliff of catastrophe.

“Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the President or any other public official save exactly to the degree in which he himself stands by the country. It is patriotic to support him in so far as he efficiently serves the country. It is unpatriotic not to oppose him to the exact extent that by inefficiency or otherwise he fails in his duty to stand by the country.” – President Theodore Roosevelt, 1918

And, of course the insults don’t stop at the water’s edge, as one of his few favorite words of calling women ‘nasty’ was aimed at Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle Windsor.

For him, there’s always another insult via twitter-tornado, rah-rah rally or seated huffing with folded arms of non-concern.

His interactions with German Chancellor Angela Merkel have been so rundown they are actually physically dismissive, as when she was visiting the White House and seated next to him; Trump wouldn’t fake being a gentleman and shake her hand.

When (former) Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Theresa May responded to Trump’s retweets from a far-right group in Britain with a slight rebuke for the President being wrong for doing such a thing, he roared back with a tart tweet in the mode of an adult admonishing a child for even making a peep of disapproval. As he also did in a backhanded slam lobbed at New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, when she recounted President Donald Trump telling her she ‘caused a lot of upset in her country’.

No woman; be it a Democrat or even a Republican is out of bounds for such repugnant reflection from him. Republican Presidential candidate, Carly Fiorina was smeared and snickered by someone who would never be considered having the face a pretty-boy with a figure of Charles Atlas or Adonis.

“Look at that face! Would anyone vote for that? Can you imagine that, the face of our next president?!” – Republican Presidential Candidate Donald J. Trump

Giving just another small smattering of the women his treacherous tongue has battered are journalists Maureen Dowd, Megyn Kelly, and Mika Brzezinski, who he labeled as ‘crazy’. As for a duo of high profile women with the names of Omarosa Manigault-Newman and Stephanie Clifford, they have been demeaned with the insult of being ‘a dog’ and ‘horseface’.

Well, you might think of why you should care or even give the words spoken by an angry man a second thought, for you are not Hillary ‘the hated’, Maxine ‘the moron’, or any other name near or far listed above. Those women aforementioned in this article are not like you, or women like them are not a part of your life as family or friends.

America’s Puritanism

Franklin, along with the others who founded this country, was very smart. He realized that government, any government, would likely devolve into tyranny over time, and it was vitally important for the people to mount an armed opposition. Now don’t misunderstand me. “Armed” doesn’t necessarily mean armed with guns. It can mean armed with unfettered freedom of the press and expression. The pen was mightier than the sword — today the Internet may be mightier than the guns of the would be oppressors. That’s why I’m denied Internet access in prison. My ideas are dangerous to my oppressors.

Today, all of the laws of the Federal and state codes and courts would fill a large library. Law has become so complex that no one person can possibly be familiar with all of it, and it gets worse every time the legislatures meet, and the hundreds of courts hand down decisions. In the resulting quagmire, something that is perfectly legal in one state becomes a. crime, sometimes a serious crime, the instant you step across an invisible state border.

In the late 1960s, I lived in Washington, DC. I was in my early twenties and my girlfriend, who lived with me, was sixteen. That was perfectly legal in DC, where the age of consent was sixteen, but if we visited my friends in Virginia, we’d better not sleep together, because she was illegal in Virginia. We did anyway, but I could have been in serious trouble if the police found out and chose to enforce that particular silly law.

When I was going to Germany regularly, I did nude photo shoots with professional models, one of them a friend’s daughter, who were sixteen and seventeen. Those photographs are potentially illegal in the USA. If I’d gone over to the Czech Republic, the legal age was fifteen. These weren’t erotic images in my opinion, just artistic nudes shot outdoors in public parks, but as long as we have judges and juries that find any nude images at all intolerable, no one who photographs nudes is safe. Were these idiots born fully clothed?

After what happened to Jock Sturges and my friend Lee Higgs, both raided by the FBI, I was afraid to take the chance and bring my European nudes home, but it did me no good, because the judge and jury I went before found my perfectly legal images offensive.

BTW, neither Sturges nor Higgs was ever charged with anything, but homes were raided, wives and children terrorized, and confiscated photos and equipment returned damaged, or not returned at all.

Sturges had photographed young nudes in France, where no one cared. Higgs had proof all his models were legal, but that didn’t prevent the raid. His cool book Generation Fetish is a classic, but 100% legal.

If nothing is done about silly laws and our crazy “justice system” soon the volume of laws will be so great that almost anything you do will violate at least one.

Just like those who can justify anything with a quote from the Bible, you can find good, valid law to support just about any premise.

Worst are what I call anti-pleasure laws, laws against having fun.

The Honorable Helen Clark, former Prime Minister of New Zealand, recently said:

“We need to accept that behaviors and actions of others that are not aligned with our own mental perspectives do not need to be turned into criminal offences.”

What a perceptive and succinct statement of the problem. Our society has become more and more intolerant of those who choose to be different, and I’m in prison solely because of that intolerance.

Unfortunately, those men who wrote our Constitution and Bill of Rights did not spell out a right to privacy, a right to be left alone. The U. S. Supreme Court in Lawrence v. Texas, in 2007, said that any private sexual activity between consenting adults was none of the government’s damned business, and struck down the Texas law against “sodomy,” taking with it similar laws in a number of other states.

OK, let’s analyze that a bit. If I decide I’m horny and in need of some company, and call an escort service, and a young woman (or man, depending on my sex and orientation) comes to my residence or hotel room and we have sex, so long as we’re both consenting adults, there’s no crime, right? Nope, they can still bust us. “But the Supreme Court said it was OK,” we argue. “Yes,” they answer, “but you can’t charge for or pay for it.” Where’s that in the Court’s ruling? Read Lawrence v. Texas, and you won’t see that anywhere. I have a copy of the case right here, and it quite plainly does not say that.

The problem is that local police, prosecutors, and judges have a habit of ignoring court rulings they don’t like. After Lawrence, prostitution should have been legal throughout the USA, and not just in a few places in Nevada.

My friends and I, so long as we’re all consenting adults, should be able to hold S & M orgies in private without the fear of some idiot puritans busting us because they’re terrified that someone somewhere might be having sex for reasons other than procreation. Someone might be having too much fun. In his dissent in the Lawrence case, Justice Scalia worried that the ruling might legalize drug use in private by consenting adults. So fucking what if it did? So long as no one is forced to participate, and no children are involved, why should it be anybody else’s business?

And, with young people maturing much earlier, we need to revise our definition of “child.” I’ve known thirteen year olds who were already sexually active with partners their own age, and whose parents got them birth control pills. Those were children?
